20,000 Sq.Ft. Protected with 4G Surface Guard
The Pasadena Chalk Festival contacted us looking for a solution to make post-event cleanup easier on the Paseo promenade while preserving the natural texture and appearance of the concrete surface.
As the world’s largest street painting festival, the event attracts hundreds of artists who create large-scale works using chalk, tempera paints, and custom pigments. Organizers needed a way to protect the concrete beneath the artwork without affecting the artists’ ability to work or creating a slippery surface for attendees.
Protecting the Paseo Promenade
Following application of 4G Surface Guard FLOORS with a SOLO 454 Heavy Duty Sprayer more than 600 artists transformed approximately 20,000 square feet of pavement into a vibrant outdoor art gallery.
The artwork remained on display during the festival and for several weeks afterward, enduring heavy foot traffic, exposure to the elements, and Southern California temperatures exceeding 100°F.
Cleanup Results
When it was time for cleanup, many of the murals were removed using hot water alone.
In areas where artists used tempera paints that penetrated deeper into the porous concrete, Bare Brick Stone & Masonry Graffiti Remover was used to dissolve and lift residual pigments from the surface without damaging the concrete.
The combination of 4G Surface Guard FLOORS and Bare Brick Stone & Masonry Graffiti Remover helped restore the concrete surface efficiently while preserving the integrity of the substrate.
FIELD TESTING BEFORE THE FESTIVAL
Two solutions were considered for the project: 4G Surface Guard FLOORS and World’s Best Graffiti Coating.
After reviewing the requirements and conducting field testing, 4G Surface Guard FLOORS was selected because it is a penetrating impregnation treatment rather than a film-forming coating. This allowed the concrete to maintain its natural appearance and texture while helping simplify future cleanup.
